Piece presented by Marisa Bernotti: FACING 'THAT', 2022
ARTIST STATEMENT
Fear is a feeling of anguish that can be caused by the presence of real or imagined danger. It is also a feeling of lack of confidence in oneself. Throughout her life Marisa has felt different fears: of abandonment, of losing loved ones, of the dark, of the wolf, of drowning, of not being the person they expected her to be … As she grew older she was able to dispel those fears but others appeared. Through her drawings and journal writings, she let out all those fears, real and imaginary. By becoming simple colored drawings, she could realize that they are just that: “drawings and letters with bright colors.” Through her work she invited us, as spectators, to: Face it, “that”.
CURATORIAL PROPOSITION
For ‘DO write [right] to me,’ Uncool Artist invited artists from its community to think through their artworks about the idea of remote communication, asking questions, proposing action, reflection, and dialogue.
The result is an exhibition that speaks to our time by interrogating wholeness, remoteness, isolation, and the use of technology to maintain human connection; while reviving the Mail Art network that was extremely important during the 60s and 70s in Latin America. This time, we are reconfiguring the grid by circulating works between New York, Miami, and São Paulo.
The word ‘DO’ in the exhibition’s title is a homage to Sol LeWitt’s famous letter to Eva Hesse. This letter inspired the name of ‘Uncool Artist.’ LeWitt encouraged Hesse to dump her worries and just DO, “Don’t worry about cool, make your own uncool.” In this case, ‘DO’ serves as encouragement for the public to engage. The request to ‘write’ alludes to Uncool Artist’s philosophy of collaboration through multiple locations. The inclusion of the word ‘right’ in the title offers the alternative to read it as ‘DO right to me,’ as in Bob Dylan’s song (1978), a sort of hymn to living life doing right unto others. In this case, artists and audiences will be doing ‘right’ to each other through their interaction.
Uncool Artist is an independent art community based in Brooklyn, NY. This show is supported by Kew Management and ChaShaMa, and curated by Ana Roman and Dainy Tapia (ArtSeen365).
